(3 + 4 = 7 Dwarfs.

I do not pretend that everyone will agree with my mythic reading of Harry Potter, nor do I claim that everyone must read the series for the Ultimate Truth. To be freed from our fixation on the oral-literary dichotomy and to make sense of the latest fairy-tale vogue that has accompanied globalization and the digital age, it is necessary not only to acknowledge the flexibility and adaptability of folktales and fairy tales but also to understand their dynamic intertextuality and intermedial potential (Haase, “Hypertextual Gutenberg”).

Again, the eponymous protagonist serves as a palimpsest of previous lives; and as with the crone of Briar Rose, Coover rescues the figure of demonized femininity.

But no matter how entrenched, the broad cultural clich es about fairy-tale sexuality are predictably disconnected from the historical realities of the genre. Yet Splash is no more than a loose adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid,” notably eliminating Andersen’s emphasis on the costs and consequences of the mermaid’s human transformation to create a conventional Hollywood romance. In an important (albeit minority) group of tales, a berated or threatened wife takes control of her husband with a positive outcome.

The German author €hlt Grimm’s Janosch presented his own ironic versions of Grimm tales in Janosch erza €rchen (1972; translated as Not Quite as Grimm, 1974). He had heard of Dunino Church, and knew something of its associations. And yes, Raja Bersiong is another wicked king, who developed a penchant for human blood in his curry after a cook accidentally cut his hand while cooking a royal feast. This is the alarming story, ending with a shout that is meant and “The Three Wee Pigs” are suitable for very young children, and are perennially popular. “The Three Bears” has no type number, probably because it was long regarded as being the invention of Robert Southey, who actually only retold it.
